Microneedling Treatment An Overview
Collagen and elastin give your skin a plump, youthful and healthy look. Once you reach the age of 30, the elastin and collagen levels in your skin starts declining. Microneedling treatment can help you turn back the hands of time.
Skin starts sagging, wrinkles and sunspots appear. All of these age-related changes slow down cell regeneration, due to which your skin might start looking dull, dry or uneven.
It is also known as Collagen Induction therapy.
What is Microneedling Treatment?
Microneedling is a fast, effective cosmetic procedure that can rejuvenate and renew your skin. It involves pricking the skin with tiny sterilized needles.
Today is a popular skin rejuvenation technique that regenerates collagen and elastin to counteract scars, wrinkles, fine lines, and large pores. The production of elastin and collagen increases which assist in healing your skin.
Your skin looks younger as fine lines and wrinkles are smoothened. Microneedling also evens out your tone, improves scars, and minimizes pore size.
During a microneedling session, a small handheld device gently presses ultra-thin needles into your face and neck. You aesthetician or dermatologist controls the amount and depth of the pinpricks.
The aim of the procedure is to trigger the production of collagen and elastin which otherwise starts slowing down with passage of time. These pinpricks in the skin trigger the release of growth factors, thereby triggering the wound healing process.
The microneedling procedure is performed using a state-of-the-art medical device that has tiny and fine microneedles, which gently create tiny channels in the top layer of the skin. The skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue which is more even in tone and texture. If you have a skin problem, microneedling might just be the solution you’ve been seeking.
Most people require around three to six sessions to achieve optimal results. Each treatment is spaced about a month apart. This gives your skin sufficient time to heal and boost collagen and elastin production. If you have acne pocks, age spots, deep wrinkles, or pits, your aesthetician may recommend up to 10 sessions to restore vibrancy of your skin.
Microneedling Treatment Procedures
Microneedling treatment procedure uses handheld devices like Dermaroller or DermaPen.
Firstly, a topical anesthetic is applied in the selected area. This will make you comfortable throughout the treatment session.
Your dermatologist will adjust the depth of needle penetration depending on the skin condition and skin thickness.
The specific procedure types are outlined below:
1. Microneedling Treatment
Microneedling uses microneedles measuring approximately 0.1 – 0.25 in diameter to create pin pricks on the outer layer of your skin. Due to these micro injuries, the body’s natural healing process kick-off.
This results in visible improvements in the resiliency and texture of your skin. This entire session lasts for 45 minutes and requires the use of topical anesthesia on thoroughly cleansed skin.
2. Microneedling Treatment + PRP
This procedure combines microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and is also known as vampire facial. Platelet-rich plasma is derived from your blood.
In this procedure, the assistant will withdraw a vial of 5-15ml of blood from a vein in your arm. This vial is placed into a centrifuge, and in about 15 minutes, the formula is created. Isolation of platelets takes place when the centrifuge spins and activates the release of growth factors that stimulate healing in your tissues.
While your PRP formula is being created, the practitioner will use either Dermaroller (the rolling technique) or Dermapen (the pinprick technique) to penetrate about 2mm deep into the skin of the treatment area. This is done to prepare your skin for absorbing the serum before applying the PRP.
3. Microneedling + RF
In this procedure, radiofrequency is used with the use of a flow needle technology. When the Dermaroller or the Dermapen is moving across your skin, it allows radiofrequency energy to reach multiple layers below the skin’s surface.
The heat energy reaches into the dermis containing collagen. This is effective in stimulating the natural healing processes of the body.
4. Microneedling + PRP + Stem Cells
This procedure combines microneedling with platelet-rich plasma and stem cells. This is a powerful method for addressing minor skin concerns such as scars, acne and pore reduction.
This method has been found quite effective against mild wrinkles and skin discoloration due to hyperpigmentation and melasma. This session will utilize a platelet-rich plasma created from your blood.
This method involves extraction of platelets from your blood using the centrifuge. About 5ml to 15 ml of your blood will be collected in a vial and platelets will be separated by spinning the vial in a centrifuge.
Once your treatment area has been numbed with a topical anesthetic, a microneedling pen Dermapen is passed over the skin to create pin pricks over which the PRP will be applied. Finally, the stem cell growth factor serum is applied post the microneedling and PRP processes.
Microneedling Healing and Risks
This would help you to set your expectations from your microneedling treatment.
The primary risk from a microneedling treatment procedure is skin irritation. The problem is not with the procedure but with the lotion or cream used.
1 Healing time- The time taken to heal can range from days to weeks, depending on how deep the pin pricks were made. You can have an allergic reaction to the serum or cream that goes in your skin after the microneedling treatment.
2 Microneedling treatment is not a quick fix- It takes time to notice a difference because your body is in the process of healing. Some people need a few more sessions than others before they see any noticeable change.
3 Redness and Pain- It is natural to feel some minor pain post-procedure. Your skin may be red for a few days.
4 Peeling- You may feel tightening of skin and flake a bit while it is healing.
5 Bruising and bleeding- Usually, there is no bleeding during microneedling treatment. However, deep microneedling treatments may cause the skin to bruise or bleed.
6 Possible scarring- Microneedling treatment is not for people who’ve had keloids, scars that look like large bubbles on the skin. It could worsen their condition.
7 Infection- Microneedling creates tiny holes in the skin, which can be an entry point for germs. This generally happens if the cleanliness of the equipment is not maintained. The risk of infection is very low and if you are healthy, the chances of contracting an infection from microneedling are very low.
